Mastering Nail Prep: What to Do Before Your Salon Visit

By HER Beauty

Listen to article

Have you ever wondered what you can really do to make your nail treatments last as long as possible? Here at HER Beauty, we know the perfect manicure or pedicure starts long before you sit down in our chair. It's all about serious nail preparation. Think of it like the groundwork for a masterpiece – the better prepared the canvas, the more beautiful and durable the final result will be.

Why Does Nail Preparation Matter So Much?

Many people think nail prep is just about removing old polish, but it goes much deeper. A clean, well-cared-for nail plate is crucial for optimal adhesion of gel, acrylic, or polish. If there are residues of grease, oil, or old products, it can lead to lifting and shortened durability. As professionals, we see it all the time – a properly prepped nail plate is the difference between a treatment that lasts for weeks and one that starts chipping after a few days. Beauty experts agree that a healthy nail is a strong nail, and your at-home care plays a big part.

Your Pre-Salon Routine: What Should You Do?

First off, don't pick or peel off old products. That damages the nail plate and can make it thin and brittle. Instead, if you have gel or acrylic, book a professional removal with us, or do it gently at home with the right products. If you only have regular nail polish, remove it the day before your visit with a gentle, acetone-free remover. We also recommend giving your nails a light shape with a nail file. Think about the shape you want, but leave the final perfecting to us.

Focus on Your Cuticles for a Clean Canvas

Your cuticles are the foundation for a flawless finish. Start gently pushing them back a few days before your appointment. Use a quality cuticle oil daily to soften them. This makes it easier for us to work neatly and precisely around the nail plate without damaging the skin. But remember, don't overdo it right before your appointment. Avoid using creams or oils just before you head out, as they can leave a greasy film that prevents optimal adhesion of new products.

The Day Before: Hydrate, But Not Too Much

The best nail preparation involves good hydration. Moisturize your hands and cuticles thoroughly in the days leading up to your appointment. This helps improve nail elasticity. However, on the day of your appointment, you should arrive with dry, clean nails. No hand cream, no oil, no lotion right before your time with us. Of course, we'll cleanse your nails, but a grease-free surface from the start is always best for a long-lasting, beautiful result. It makes our job easier, and you'll get a more durable treatment.

We can't wait to see your well-cared-for nails and create some magic!
